Description
This was the last of the French sword-type of bayonet and was manufactured to fit the French 1874 Gras infantry rifle between 1874 and about 1885. It was manufactured to fit the French Model 1874 Gras Infantry Rifle, basically a refinement of the Model 1866 Chassepot Infantry Rifle. The Gras was manufactured from 1874 to about 1885. This bayonets approximate overall length is 26in, with a 20.1/2in blade and, has wooden grips, a solid brass pommel with a few slight dings. The nicely working integral latching mechanism (push-button/ spring-steel) to a pleasing grey/ brown patination with some surface pitting. The cross-guard is numbered 23419 with various other inspection stamps. It, along with the integral muzzle-ring and the lower hooked quillon blade breaker are to a pleasing dark grey/ brown patina. The 3-edged triangular dull grey steel blade has dark grey “old” rust patination throughout and marked on the back-edge opposite the cutting edge with the arsenal, month and “1877” year of manufacture. In contradiction to novice speculation such inscriptions are not a presentation date or to a particular officer. The scabbard is of sheet-rolled steel, tubular semi-oval in shape and with a ball finial. The scabbard retains most of its original black finish. The worn mis-matched number is not clearly visible opposite the frog attaching loop. Complete, and in good overall condition for its age.
