Description
1897 Pattern George VI Royal Engineers officers sword with brown leather covered scabbard and associated silver officers identity bracelet. Overall length 39 in, blade length 32.1/2in. The unsharpened, single edged, double fullered blade to a shiny steel finish with darker “old” rust speckles throughout, and particularly to the blade edges. The engraving etching is reasonably clear with the George VI crown and GR VI monogram to one side and “ROYAL ENGINEERS” to the opposite side. The makers mark of brass at the ricaso inset into one side. The pierced steel knuckle bow with the crowned GR VI itself is not pierced there is loss of chrome to both sides/ with “old” rust speckles throughout. The shiny steel backstrap and pommel old darker “old” rust speckles throughout. The shagreen grip is complete although slightly worn, the brass wire binding with the central section absent for much of it. The brown leather covered scabbard is complete and without any door trap dents and bends, but with a small diamond cut out of it near the top (somthing to do with the sword frog fitting?).
Fastened to the hilt (how it came) is a small oval apparently hall marked silver identity bracelet on a chain engraved “LIEUT W S ROWLEY 71914 C of E”.
Other than the mentiond slight defects in good overall condition for age.
